Internal Theft: Loss Prevention Consultation, Asset Protection, Deter Losses, Internal Theft, Fraud, Avoid Lost Time, Lost Revenue, Liability Claims, Investigation

As part of our loss prevention consultation services, Summit LP conducts comprehensive investigations when theft is detected or suspected, whether it's internal theft of goods by employees or vendors, theft or embezzlement of cash by company personnel, or loss of product from fraud, robbery or other external sources.

We provide our investigative services to businesses of all types and sizes. We have performed thousands of investigations of all types and sizes, from cashier fraud within a small family owned hair salon chain to a Hollywood motion picture studio and the pre-release theft and sale of a major holiday DVD release.

We can also provide Loss Prevention Awareness Training for management and staff to help pro-actively deter losses from occurring, as well as provide background checks and pre-employment drug screening services to help improve hiring practices.

Internal Theft: A Costly Problem That Can Be Controlled

According to The Institute for Financial Crime Prevention, "The largest single component of white-collar crime is internal theft by employees." Employee theft costs US businesses more than $40 billion a year, or about 6% of total gross revenues.

Normally, before an average employee would steal from their workplace, three basic components need to be present, each of which can be dealt with and controlled to a certain extent with the proper policies and procedures in place:

  1. Personal Pressures - the stresses and problems of everyday life can cause an employee to feel the need for money, whether because of a family medical crisis, loss of a spouse's job, or due to a substance or gambling addiction. Sometimes, even the most honest of persons feels pressures that can cause them to make a bad decision.

While employers have very limited control on the external pressures affecting an employee, resources exist, such as employee crisis counseling and help lines, that can be established to assist them through the stresses that could tempt them to break the law. We can help your Human Resource department develop and implement these critical employee assistance programs.

  2. An Opportunity to Commit the Crime - employees can not steal from you if you don't give them the chance. While a certain percentage of employees will steal to seek revenge for a perceived wrong done to them, or for the thrill of the action, most people would never steal if they were not presented with the opportunity to do so.

You can address four main areas of concern to help reduce these potential opportunities:

    • Poor internal security controls - such as video surveillance, product placement & inventory control
    • Too much control placed with too few individuals - who watches the watchers?
    • Poor management practices - lax attitude toward company procedures or policies
    • Poor hiring practices - no, or limited, prescreening of candidates for employment

To help reduce the opportunities to steal, Summit LP can conduct a Site Security Assessment to review current security procedures, employee hiring practices, and other areas vital to a strong loss prevention program.

  3. The Honesty and Integrity of Your Personnel - hiring the wrong people can cost your company thousands of dollars a year. No résumé or personal interview will reveal the information needed to detect a dishonest individual. In today's world, a more thorough view of a candidate's background is required to ensure the employment of the right individuals.

Summit can perform confidential and comprehensive background checks to help determine the credibility and honesty of applicants. A few of the checks we can perform include:

    • Social Security Number verification
    • Criminal and civil court records
    • Financial, credit and bankruptcy records
    • Education and employment record verification
    • Professional reference checks

We can also help establish a Drug-free Workplace Policy and pre-employment drug screening program to help eliminate the potentially dangerous and costly substance abuser from your workforce.
