Case Study # 4: Contractor Fraud on
the Job Site
Contractor Fraud Case Study # 4 – Contractor Fraud on the Job Site: Case Studies, Summit Loss Prevention Consulting, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana (IN)
Summit Loss Prevention Consulting's president, Tony Jarana, has worked on
thousands of different types of cases during a quarter century of field
work and loss prevention management. This is just one example of the
many situations in which you may find yourself:
Case Study # 4
The owner of a business subcontracted to work on building a large retail store in central Ohio
filed a theft claim with his new insurance company and the local police for over $67,000 in materials, tools and equipment
reportedly missing from the job site.
In pursuing the claim, the insurance company decided to retain Summit to look into the matter in depth. After only 2 days on the assignment
Summit investigators were able to determine that the newly insured
sub-contractor had filed 6 other theft reports and property loss
claims with previous insurers and police agencies at the same building site.
Extensive interviews were conducted with field personnel and the site foreman.
The information obtained put the claimant in a very questionable position.
When the investigators got too close, the claimant recanted his loss claim and stated it was all a misunderstanding between his company and the General Contractor.
Insurance Fraud: Risking Your Future - Too High a Price to Pay
The information uncovered by Summit was not in any police or
insurance investigator's report. Summit apprised the insurance carrier of this new information and it significantly altered the
contractor's relationship with the carrier, as well as his livelihood
and professional reputation.
Due to Summit's investigation, the claimant's coverage was cancelled shortly thereafter. Not surprisingly, this subcontractor ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy within weeks of this misstated claim.
